Social Security Disability and Back-Pay

Social Security Disability and Back-Pay

Upon approval of Social Security disability (SSD) benefits, you may be eligible for back-pay. There is not a limit to the amount of back-pay you can receive, and whether or not you are eligible is determined by the date you filed for disability and the date your disability started. For example, if you file for disability twelve months after you became disabled, and the claims process took an additional twelve months to be approved, you may be entitled to 24 months of back-pay if the Social Security Administration established that you were eligible for benefits at the time of your application.

Social Security Disability Benefits Back-Pay Payments

If you have been approved for SSD benefits, and you are entitled to back-pay, you will receive the back-pay sum in one payment. If you have been approved for SSI (Supplemental Security Income) benefits, you will be paid back-pay amounts spread across three payments instead of one payment.
