Your Veterans Disability application is complete. What’s next?

Now that you’ve submitted the initial Veterans Disability Application for Compensation and/or Pension, there are things you can do to prepare while you’re waiting for your letter from the VA that will tell you the next steps.

This letter may ask you to assist the VA in obtaining medical records from your providers. It would be in your best interest to have this information organized ahead of time for quick and easy reference. The VA may also ask you to sign release forms so they can obtain information directly from these sources without your assistance.

Don’t be surprised if the VA returns with additional forms or asks you to undergo a free medical examination to supplement their records. Be sure to fill out and return any requested paperwork in a timely manner, and attend all requested medical examinations and meetings. Being prepared and compliant will go a long way in making this process as seamless as possible.

Once the VA has all of the necessary information, it will assign you a disability rating based on its rating system and send you a letter regarding this decision.
