Are You Eligible for the Veterans Choice Program?

Beginning last November, the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014 (VACAA) instituted the Veterans Choice Program (VCP), designed to improve veterans’ access to healthcare by connecting them with quality civilian medical professionals.

However, not all veterans are eligible for the Choice Program; they must have been waiting over 30 days for an appointment at their local VA healthcare facility, live more than 40 miles from the nearest one, have geographical traveling challenges or have to travel by boat or plane to get to the nearest VA facility. Qualifying veterans will be notified by a letter containing a Choice Card and further instructions.

It’s important to know that the Veterans Choice Program only covers VA-approved visits and treatments. It also won’t impact your existing healthcare plan or VA benefits. Remember that, if you meet one of the qualifications but don’t want to change providers, you absolutely don’t have to. It’s your choice between VA and civilian healthcare under this program.

If you have questions about VA benefits or need guidance regarding your claim, the expert staff of Jan Dils, Attorneys at Law, can help you navigate your case with confidence.
