Tips for a Successful VA Claim in 2014

It’s a new year! And while many people are making resolutions they won’t keep, here are some helpful things you can do to help your VA DisabiSuccessful VA claimslity Case in 2014.

Seek Treatment-As I have stated so many times in the past, one of the best things you can do to help your case is to seek treatment. Regardless if it is rehabilitation for a physical condition, going to group counseling for a mental disability, or even taking medication, treatment will help. Something a lot of Vets forget is that you need to continue to seek treatment once a claim is filed. I know this is not fun. I personally don’t like going to the doctor. In fact, my last doctor disliked me so much that he sent me a letter in the mail asking me to never come back. Hopefully your relationship with your medical professional provider is better than mine. Seeking regular treatment does not mean that you have to see a doctor every week. Try not to have huge gaps in your treatment. Most regular checkups are once every six months.

Be Proactive-If you receive a decision from the VA that is unfavorable, don’t wait to appeal it. Think about this. If you file a claim, it can take 8-12 months for the VA to get back to you on a decision. On your first denial you have 12 months to file an appeal. Too often people wait until month 11 or 12 to file an appeal. If you would have filed the appeal when the decision was granted, you would likely have a second decision back by the time the first decision expired.

Book launchEducate Yourself-The VA disability process is quite a complicated system. I’m not suggesting you read the entire CFR in one night…that would be about as entertaining as reading most insurance policies. You can find less painful information in traditional websites, social media, and even blogs. Blogs like this one for instance. In fact, you should even share this blog with your friends. Blatant personal endorsement aside, we do update this blog often, and lots of people read it, so it’s a great source. Also, the VA has done an awesome job of keeping people informed via Twitter and The Facebook. Check those sites out for great information too.

Weigh Your Options-I’m not saying that you need to seek help from an attorney, but, it is what I get paid to do. A law firm like ours has no upfront cost, a friendly staff, and the knowledge to help you properly. If I were seeking help with a VA claim, I’d want someone fighting for me who has a vested interest in the outcome and the resources to research your case. Plus, were not like what you see on TV. There are no Law and Order types in this office. We are just regular people, many with law degrees, who have a passion for helping Veterans that can’t be beat.
