What does the CHAMPVA mean for veterans’ dependents?

Under the Civilian Health and Medical Program for the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA), medical care is provided in the same or similar manner for both dependents of active duty and dependents of retired members of the Armed Forces.

The VA shares the costs of medically necessary services and supplies for eligible beneficiaries, including the spouse or child of a veteran who:

  • Has a permanent and total service-connected disability.
  • Died as a result of a service-connected disability.
  • At the time of death, was already considered to be permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected disability.
  • Died on active duty.
