Many Services Offer Tax Prep Help for Veterans

It’s tax season, which can be an especially frustrating time of year for veterans struggling to make sense of their VA disability benefits. When it comes to filing taxes, we recommend that less experienced individuals seek the help of a tax professional to ensure not only that every detail is accurate, but that you take advantage of every exemption for which you’re eligible.

If you’re worried about affording the services of a tax professional, don’t be. There are many services who offer tax prep help for veterans for free or at significantly lowered rates. There are also the following online options:

  • If you are elderly or earn less than $53,000 annually, the IRS has two programs, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (See irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep).
  • There’s also another free program online called MyFreeTaxes (www.myfreetaxes.com) for which certain veterans and their families may be eligible.
  • The website irs.gov/freefile also offers many of the leading at-home tax softwares free for certain veterans and military families.

If you’re not technologically inclined, many community centers offer tax preparation programs. Your local government offices will have the details, so don’t hesitate to get the help you need for the best tax refund possible.
